KILL GIL is the documentary directed and produced by Gil Rossellini, depicting his four-year fight against a bacterial infection (to which he succumbed on October3, 2008).
The film deals with the ordeal the filmmaker faced in 2004, when he was diagnosed with a terrible disease confining him to a wheelchair, possibly for the rest of his life. On November 19th, 2004, Rossellini was in the Swedish capital to present one of his latest films at the Stockholm International Film Festival, when he suddenly collapsed. He spent three weeks in a Swedish hospital in a deep coma, and underwent many surgical procedures. Miraculously he awakened from the coma and was transferred to a specialized clinic in Switzerland. On July 23rd of the same year, Rossellini was able to return to Rome with the aid of a wheelchair.
As noted by Variety, the film is “a widely praised video diary of his long hospitalization, many surgeries, and resulting paraplegic condition, which manages to be uplifting thanks to his self-deprecating humor and unstoppable vitality.”
